The Schmersal AZ 17-02ZRI B6R is a safety switch with a separate actuator designed for use with sliding, hinged, and removable safety guards. It is classified as a type 2 interlocking device. Key operational requirements include ensuring the actuator is correctly aligned with the switch and that the electrical connection is performed by authorized personnel in a de-energized state.
Product description
The safety switch is designed to terminate hazardous situations immediately when a safety guard is opened. When the guard is opened, the NC (Normally Closed) contacts are positively opened, and the NO (Normally Open) contacts are closed.
Mounting
General mounting instructions:

- The mounting position must prevent the ingress of dirt and soiling into the used opening.
- Use the supplied base plate for fixing.
- The tightening torque of the fixing screws must not exceed 150 Ncm.
- The enclosure must not be used as an end stop.
- Unused openings must be sealed with slot sealing plugs.
Mounting of the actuator:
- The marks on the actuator opening of the switch and on the actuator must be opposite each other.
- The actuator must be permanently fitted to the safety guard and protected against displacement (e.g., using tamperproof screws or gluing).
- For hinged guards, ensure the point of rotation is within the range of the upper surface of the safety switch.
- The B6L and B6R actuators are factory-set to the smallest radius. To increase the radius, turn the setting screws (a + b) using a 2.0 mm hexagonal key.
Electrical connection
IDC method of termination:

- This method allows connecting flexible wires (0.75 to 1 mm²) without conductor ferrules.
- Strip the wire for 17 to 20 mm.
- Insert the wire into the cable gland and close it.
- Push the conductors into the groove of the cover.
- Screw the cover back on, tightening the Torx T10 screws uniformly to 0.7 to 1 Nm.
Set-up and maintenance
The safety switch is maintenance-free under correct installation and use. A regular visual inspection and functional test are recommended, including:
- Checking for correct installation of the actuator and switch.
- Verifying the integrity of the cable entry and connections.
- Inspecting the switch enclosure for damages.
- Removing particles of dust and soiling.
- Replacing damaged or defective components immediately.
Technical data
The device is rated IP67 and operates in temperatures ranging from -30 °C to +80 °C. It is suitable for use in safety chains up to Cat. 1 / PL c, or Cat. 3 / PL d when used in a 2-channel configuration with a suitable logic unit.

Common problems
Verify correct installation of the actuator and switch, and ensure cable entry and connections are intact.
Damaged or defective components must be replaced immediately.
Ensure protection against tampering, for instance by using replacement actuators or tamperproof screws.
Before use
- Verify the safety switch is suitable for the application (Type 2 interlocking device).
- Ensure the actuator is compatible with the safety guard type (sliding, hinged, removable).
- Check that the mounting position prevents dirt ingress.
- Ensure the electrical supply is de-energized before connection.
- Verify the cable section is between 0.75 mm² and 1 mm² for IDC termination.
Specs in practice
- Ambient temperature
- Operating range is -30 °C to +80 °C.
- Switching frequency
- Maximum 2,000 operations per hour.
- Tightening torque (cover)
- 0.7 to 1 Nm for Torx T10 screws.
Images and diagrams
- Wiring diagrams show NC contacts with positive break.
- IDC termination steps illustrate stripping and inserting wires into the cable gland.
- Actuator adjustment diagrams show how to increase the radius using setting screws a and b.
Model compatibility
- Suitable for sliding, hinged, and removable safety guards.
- Classified as type 2 interlocking devices per EN ISO 14119.
- Suitable up to Cat. 1 / PL c; up to Cat. 3 / PL d with 2-channel usage and fault exclusion.
