Quick Guide for Installation

This document outlines the approved methods for installing and connecting nonmetallic air ducts and connectors with plain ends. Two primary installation methods are detailed: using tape and fasteners, or using mastic and fasteners. Always ensure that all materials used, such as tapes and clamps, comply with the specified UL standards to maintain system integrity and safety.

Connections Using Tape and Fasteners

Connection procedure using tape and fasteners

  1. Determine the desired length and cut the duct completely around using a knife or scissors. Cut the wire using wire cutters.
  2. Fold back the jacket and insulation from the core.
  3. Slide at least 1 inch (25 mm) of the core over the fitting and past the bead.
  4. Seal the core to the collar with at least 2 wraps of duct tape.
  5. Secure the connection with a clamp placed over the core, tape, and past the bead.
  6. Pull the jacket and insulation back over the core and tape the jacket with at least 2 wraps of duct tape. A clamp may be used in place of or in combination with the duct tape.

Splices Using Tape and Fasteners

  1. Fold back the jacket and insulation from the core.
  2. Butt two cores together on a minimum 4-inch (100 mm) length metal sleeve.
  3. Tape the cores together with at least 2 wraps of duct tape.
  4. Secure the connection with 2 clamps placed over the taped core ends and past the beads.
  5. Pull the jacket and insulation back over the cores and tape the jacket.

Connections and Splices Using Mastic and Fasteners

  1. Cut the duct to the desired length and pull back the jacket and insulation from the core.
  2. Apply mastic approximately 2 inches (50 mm) wide uniformly around the collar of the metal fitting or over the ends of a 4-inch (100 mm) length metal sleeve.
  3. Slide at least 2 inches (50 mm) of the core over the fitting or sleeve and past the bead.
  4. Secure the core to the collar with a clamp applied past the bead. For splices, secure cores to the sleeve ends with 2 clamps applied past the beads.
  5. Pull the jacket and insulation back over the cores and tape the jacket(s) with at least 2 wraps of duct tape. A clamp may be used in place of or in combination with the duct tape.

Important Standards and Notes

  • Uninsulated Ducts: For uninsulated air ducts and air connectors, disregard references to insulation and jacket.
  • Fittings: Use beaded sheet metal fittings and sleeves when using nonmetallic clamps.
  • Tapes: Must be listed and labeled in accordance with Standard UL 181B and marked 181B-FX.
  • Clamps: Must be listed and labeled in accordance with Standard UL 181B and marked 181B-C.
  • Pressure Limit: Use of nonmetallic clamps shall be limited to 6 in. w.g. (1500 Pa) positive pressure.

Practical help

Common problems

Air leakage at the connection point

Ensure at least 2 wraps of duct tape are applied and that clamps are secured firmly past the bead.

Exceeding pressure limits with nonmetallic clamps

Do not exceed 6 in. w.g. (1500 Pa) positive pressure when using nonmetallic clamps.

Before use

  • Verify that the duct is cut to the correct length.
  • Ensure you have a knife or scissors for cutting the duct and wire cutters for the wire.
  • Confirm you have the correct UL 181B listed tapes and clamps.
  • If using mastic, ensure you have the appropriate mastic for the application.
  • Check that metal fittings or sleeves are beaded.

Specs in practice

6 in. w.g. [1500 Pa]
Maximum positive pressure limit when using nonmetallic clamps.
4 inches [100 mm]
Minimum length of the metal sleeve required for splicing two cores.
2 inches [50 mm]
Required width of mastic application around the collar or sleeve.

Model compatibility

  • Tapes must be UL 181B listed and marked '181B-FX'.
  • Clamps must be UL 181B listed and marked '181B-C'.
  • For uninsulated ducts, ignore instructions regarding insulation and jacket.
