User Manual for Broan 165FT and 167FT Fan Forced Wall Heater

This document provides installation, operation, and maintenance instructions for the Broan 165FT and 167FT fan-forced wall heaters. These units are designed for installation into the Broan 171H rough-in housing. Installation and electrical wiring must be performed by a qualified person in accordance with all applicable codes and standards.
Safety Information
- Warning: To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury, do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors/liquids near the heater.
- Clearance: Keep combustible materials (furniture, curtains, bedding, etc.) at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front of the heater.
- Installation: Install at least 6 inches from the floor or adjacent walls. The unit must be installed horizontally in a wall.
- Grounding: This product must be grounded.
Installation
Ensure the wall is finished (including paint or wallpaper) before installing the heater assembly.


- Remove the housing mask from the rough-in housing.
- Place the element end of the heater assembly behind the tabs on the left side of the housing.
- Pivot the assembly into place and fasten it using the retaining screw from the parts bag.
- Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle.
- Attach the grille and push the knob onto the thermostat stem.
Wiring and Conversion
The heater can be operated using its built-in thermostat or a remote thermostat (Broan Model 86W). The 165FT model can be converted to operate on 120 VAC.

165FT 120V Conversion
- Disconnect the black wire from the white wire.
- Connect the two white wires with insulated terminals to each other.
- Connect the black wire to the terminal on the motor.
167FT Full-Wattage Conversion
The heater will produce more heat and use more electricity if converted to full-wattage. Connect the unattached black wire (with the insulated terminal) to the motor terminal.
Operation
Turn on the power at the service entrance. Turn the thermostat to its highest setting to verify the heating element and blower turn on. Turn it to the lowest setting to verify they shut off.
Maintenance
Thermal Overload Protector: If the heater fails to operate when the thermostat is at the highest setting, turn off power at the service entrance, remove the knob and grille, and press the button marked RESET.

Cleaning: Clean the heater once a month. Turn off power at the service panel, ensure the heating element is cool, and use a soft brush attachment to vacuum the grille openings or wipe the grille with a soft cloth. Never immerse metal or electrical parts in water.

Common problems
