The California Air Tools 10020DSMAD is an ultra-quiet, oil-free smart air compressor. This guide provides essential information for setup, operation, and maintenance. Always read the full manual for complete safety instructions.
Safety Instructions
- Electrical Safety: Use only a dedicated 15 Amp circuit. Ensure the unit is properly grounded. Do not use extension cords longer than 25 feet (14 gauge).
- Operating Environment: Operate on a flat surface (incline no greater than 15 degrees). Maintain at least 2 feet of clearance around the unit for airflow.
- Hot Surfaces: Cylinder heads and delivery pipes become hot during operation. Allow to cool before touching.
- Pressure Safety: Never exceed the maximum rated pressure. Drain the air tank daily to prevent rust and potential explosion.
Assembly and Setup
Before first use, install the air filters:

- Attach the two air filters to the top rear left and right side of the motor head's threaded ports.
- Screw the filters clockwise until secure (hand tighten only).
- Push the 4-inch air filter intake tubes into the filter ports.
Operating the Compressor
Test Run:

- Plug into a 110V 60Hz outlet.
- Press and hold the SMART switch OK button for 4 seconds to turn on.
- The motor should start and fill the tank to 120 PSI, then automatically shut off.
Daily Operation:
- Connect your air hose to the Industrial Female (1/4" NPT) quick coupler.
- Use the regulator knob to adjust output pressure.
- To shut down, press and hold the SMART switch OK button for 4 seconds, unplug the unit, and release remaining tank pressure.
Maintenance

- Automatic Drain: The EZ-1 Automatic Drain Valve drains the tank when the compressor starts and after 2 minutes of continuous running.
- Air Filter: Regularly clean the filter element by blowing off dirt or brushing it. Replace if clogged.
- Leak Testing: Spray soapy water on connections. If bubbles appear, tighten or replace the leaking part.
- Desiccant Replacement: Replace the 80% Air Dryer Desiccant every 2000 motor operating hours or every 1-2 years.
Troubleshooting
- Pressure drop: Check for air leaks at connections.
- Compressor won't start: Check for motor overheating (thermal protector) or low voltage supply.
- Noisy operation: May indicate a damaged head gasket or reed valve; contact customer support.
- Motor won't stop: If the unit fails to stop at 120 PSI, the Smart Controller may be defective; stop immediately and contact support.
Practical help
Common problems
Check for air leaks at connections using soapy water and tighten if necessary.
Allow the motor to cool down; check for low voltage or an extension cord that is too thin/long.
Check for head pressure or low voltage supply; perform a check valve adjustment.
Check for faulty head gasket or reed valve; contact customer support.
Before use
- Inspect the air tank and all pipes for damage.
- Ensure the compressor is placed on a flat surface (incline < 15 degrees).
- Verify the electrical supply is 110V, 60Hz, 15A.
- Install both air filters and intake tubes.
- Ensure at least 2 feet of obstacle-free space around the unit.
Specs in practice
- Working Pressure
- 90-120 PSI (+/- 5 PSI). Adjustable up to 105 PSI Kick-On and 130 PSI Kick-Off.
- Desiccant Replacement
- Replace every 2000 motor operating hours or approximately every 1-2 years.
Images and diagrams
- The electrical circuit diagram shows the motor, overload protector, and capacitor connections.
- The air passage drawing illustrates the flow from the compressor through the check valve, tank, regulator, and filter.
Model compatibility
- Use only 3-wire extension cords with a 3-blade grounding plug, max 25 feet long, 14 gauge.
- Do not use adapters with this product.
- Use only high-pressure hoses and fittings designed for air compressors.
