The California Air Tools 10020SMHAD is an ultra-quiet, oil-free smart air compressor. This manual provides essential instructions for safe operation, assembly, and maintenance. Always read the full manual before use to prevent serious injury or death. The unit is designed for intermediate usage with a 70/30 duty cycle and should not run continuously for more than 60 minutes.
Assembly
Before operating, ensure the air filters and intake tubes are installed:

- Attach the two air filters to the threaded ports on the top rear left and right side of the motor head.
- Screw the filters clockwise until hand-tight.
- Push the 4-inch air filter intake tubes into the filter ports.
Operation
Starting the Compressor:

- Plug the power cord into a 110V, 60Hz, 15A outlet.
- Press and hold the SMART switch OK button for 4 seconds to turn the unit ON.
- Allow the motor to run until the tank fills and the motor stops automatically.
- Connect your air tool to the 1/4-inch Industrial Female Quick Connector.
- Use the regulator knob to adjust the air pressure as needed.
Shutting Down:
- Press and hold the SMART switch OK button for 4 seconds to turn the unit OFF.
- Unplug the power cord.
- Release remaining pressure from the tank using an air hose gun or pneumatic tool.
Maintenance
Automatic Drain Tank Operation: The EZ-1 Automatic Drain Valve eliminates water from the tank. It opens for 3 seconds when the compressor is turned on and after the motor runs continuously for 2 minutes. A manual drain bypass is available for cleaning the internal strainer if clogging occurs.

Air Filter: Regularly clean the air filter element by blowing off or brushing off dirt. Replace the filter if it remains clogged.
Leak Testing: Spray soapy water on connections. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection or replace the faulty part.
Troubleshooting
- Pressure drop in tank: Check for air leaks at connections. Tighten if necessary.
- Compressor stopped/won't start: The thermal protector may have tripped due to overheating. Allow the motor to cool. Ensure the extension cord is not too thin or long.
- Motor hums but won't start: Check for head pressure or low voltage. Perform a check valve adjustment.
- Noisy operation: Possible damaged gasket or reed valve. Stop use and contact support.

Common problems
Check for air leaks at connections using soapy water. Tighten leaky connections.
Motor may be overheated. Allow to cool. Check if the extension cord is too thin or long, causing voltage drop.
Check for head pressure or low voltage. Perform a check valve adjustment and drain the air tank.
The unloader valve seal may be defective. Release all tank pressure, remove the plug, clean the seal, or replace the unloader.
Before use
- Inspect the air tank and all parts for damage.
- Ensure all pipes are firmly connected.
- Place the compressor on a flat surface (incline no greater than 15 degrees).
- Maintain at least 2 feet of clear space around the unit for airflow.
- Ensure the air filter is properly installed.
- Verify the power supply is a dedicated 15 Amp circuit.
Specs in practice
- Working Pressure
- 90-120 PSI (+/- 5 PSI). Adjustable up to 105 PSI Kick-On and 130 PSI Kick-Off maximum.
- Electrical Requirement
- 110 Volts, 60 Hertz, 15 Amp outlet. Use a heavy-duty extension cord (max 25 ft, 14 gauge).
Images and diagrams
- The electrical circuit diagram shows the pressure switch, solenoid valve, motor, and overload protector.
- The air passage drawing illustrates the flow from the compressor through the check valve, tank, regulator, and filter.
Model compatibility
- Use only 3-wire extension cords with a 3-blade grounding plug.
- Do not use an adapter with this product.
