Quick Guide from the Manual
This document provides essential compatibility information for Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) and IM and Presence Service Release 14x. It outlines supported upgrade paths, required COP files, supported endpoints, and infrastructure requirements. Administrators should review this document before performing any system upgrades or migrations to ensure service continuity.
Upgrade and Migration Paths
Upgrading to Release 14 requires specific mechanisms depending on the source version. Key requirements include:
- COP Files: Always check if your upgrade path requires specific COP files. These must be installed on each node before beginning the upgrade via the Cisco Unified OS Admin interface or Prime Collaboration Deployment (PCD) tool.
- Upgrade Readiness: It is strongly recommended to run the Upgrade Readiness COP file prior to any upgrade to maximize success.
- FIPS Mode: If the source system is in FIPS mode, specific migration constraints apply. You may need to place PCD in non-FIPS mode or use a Fresh Install with Data Import instead of the standard migration task.
- Version Switching: This capability allows you to install a new version as an inactive partition and switch to it. This is supported with most direct upgrades but not with migrations.
Supported Versions
The following versions are supported for Release 14:
- Release 14: CUCM 14.0.1.10000-20 and IM and Presence Service 14.0.1.10000-16.
- Release 14SU1: CUCM 14.0.1.11900-132 and IM and Presence Service 14.0.1.11900-9.
- Release 14SU2: CUCM 14.0.1.12900-161 and IM and Presence Service 14.0.1.12900-6.
Compatibility Between Components
Compatibility depends on the deployment type:
- Standard Deployment: The IM and Presence Service and the telephony deployment are in the same cluster and must run the same release.
- Centralized Deployment: The IM and Presence deployment and the telephony deployment are in different clusters and can run different releases.
Supported Endpoints and Deprecated Models
Before upgrading, verify that your endpoints are supported. Some older phone models are deprecated and will not function after upgrading to Release 14. If you have deprecated phones, you must power them down, disconnect them, and provision supported models. The system will display a warning message for deprecated phones upon login after the upgrade.
Virtualization and Infrastructure
This release supports virtualized deployments only; deployments on Cisco Media Convergence Servers are not supported. Ensure your environment meets the specific virtualization requirements for CUCM and IM and Presence Service. Supported LDAP directories include Microsoft Active Directory 2012/2016/2019, Oracle Directory Services, and Open LDAP.
Security and Encryption
The system supports specific ciphers for TLS and SSH connections. Administrators must ensure that the configured ciphers on the system match the supported lists provided in the document for various processes, including Cisco CallManager, Cisco Tomcat, and SIP Proxy. TLS 1.2 is supported for secure communications.

Practical help
Common problems
Ensure you run the Upgrade Readiness COP file prior to the upgrade to maximize success.
Check the deprecated phone list; these models will not work after upgrading to Release 14. Remove them from the network.
If the source is in FIPS mode, ensure PCD is in non-FIPS mode or use Fresh Install with Data Import.
Before use
- Verify your current source version.
- Download required COP files from the Cisco software portal.
- Check if your endpoints are supported in Release 14.
- Ensure your virtualization environment meets requirements.
- Review deprecated phone models to avoid service loss.
Specs in practice
- Version Switching
- Ability to install a new version as inactive and switch to it, reverting if necessary.
Model compatibility
- Standard Deployment: IM and Presence must run the same release as the telephony cluster.
- Centralized Deployment: IM and Presence can run different releases.
