Cisco Unity Connection 12.x Server Maintenance Guide

A comprehensive guide for maintaining Cisco Unity Connection 12.x servers, covering server migration, publisher/subscriber replacement, IP/hostname changes, and language file management.

Quick guide from the manual

This document provides essential procedures for maintaining Cisco Unity Connection 12.x servers. Key tasks include migrating physical servers to virtual machines, replacing cluster nodes (publisher/subscriber), updating network configurations (IP/hostname), and managing language packs. Always perform server replacements during off-peak hours to minimize service impact.

Migrating a Physical Server to a Virtual Machine

To migrate, follow these steps:

  • Backup software components using the Disaster Recovery System.
  • Download and deploy the required OVA template for the new virtual machine.
  • Replace the publisher and subscriber servers as needed.
  • Restore software components from the physical server backup.
  • Optionally, install or remove language files.

Replacing a Publisher Server

When upgrading or replacing a publisher in a cluster:

  1. Manually set the subscriber server status to Primary via Cluster Management.
  2. Deactivate the publisher server using the Real-Time Monitoring Tool (RTMT) and Cluster Management.
  3. Shut down the publisher server using the CLI command: utils system shutdown.
  4. Install the new virtual machine, ensuring Hostname, IP address, Time zone, and NTP server settings match the original.
  5. Run the CLI command: utils disaster_recovery prepare restore pub_from_sub on the publisher.
  6. Configure the cluster on the new publisher via System Settings > Cluster.
  7. Run the CLI command: utils cuc cluster renegotiate on the subscriber to complete the cluster restoration.

Changing the IP Address or Hostname

Before changing network settings, determine if the server is defined by hostname or IP address. Do not perform these changes during business hours.

  1. Verify server status is Primary or Secondary in Cluster Management.
  2. Backup the database using the Disaster Recovery System.
  3. Update DNS records (A and PTR) on your DNS server.
  4. Update the Hostname/IP address in Cisco Unity Connection Administration.
  5. Update network settings (IP, Ethernet, Gateway) in Cisco Unified Operating System Administration.
  6. Restart services and verify status using the CLI command: utils service list.

Adding or Removing Unity Connection Languages

Languages are not licensed, but installation consumes disk space.

  • Adding: Download the locale installer from Cisco.com. Use the Software Upgrades > Install/Upgrade menu in Cisco Unified Operating System Administration to install from a remote filesystem. Restart the Connection Conversation Manager and Connection Mixer services after installation.
  • Removing: Use the CLI command: show cuc locales to list installed languages, then run: delete cuc locale [code] to remove the specific language.

Practical help

Common problems

MD5 checksum mismatch during language download

The downloaded file is damaged. Do not install; download the file again until the MD5 values match.

Server data transfer failure during migration

Ensure the new virtual machine has the exact same Hostname, IP address, Time zone, and NTP server settings as the physical server.

Unity Connection cluster not functioning after replacement

Verify that the security password on the new server matches the existing publisher/subscriber password. Use 'set password user' on the publisher if needed.

Before use

  • Perform backups using the Disaster Recovery System.
  • Verify server status is Primary or Secondary in Cluster Management.
  • Ensure all voice messaging ports are idle before deactivating a server.
  • Check network connectivity and DNS configuration using 'utils diagnose module validate_network'.
  • Verify that the MD5 checksum of downloaded files matches the Cisco website.

Specs in practice

Publisher Server
The primary node in a Unity Connection cluster that manages the database and configuration.
Subscriber Server
A secondary node in a cluster that provides redundancy and call processing services.
Cluster Management
A tool within Cisco Unity Connection Serviceability used to manage node roles and statuses.

Model compatibility

  • Unity Connection 12.x does not enforce a limit on the number of installed languages.
  • Third-party certificates must be reconfigured after replacing a publisher or subscriber server.
  • If using intrasite, HTTPS, or SRSV networking, remove the server from the site before readdressing.
