Important Installation Information
This document provides instructions for installing an ICM soft start kit on Coleman Mach 1, 3, 3+, 10, and 15 air conditioner models. The ICM soft start effectively replaces the Start Capacitor and Start Relay, allowing for their removal, though it is not strictly necessary to remove them.
Installation Steps
- Locate the White Compressor wire on the Compressor and follow it to the electrical box Run Capacitor "C" terminal. Disconnect and splice the White wire connection to the Brown ICM soft start wire.
- Connect the Red ICM soft start wire to the location of the previous White Compressor wire terminal on the Run Capacitor "C" terminal.
- Locate the Start Capacitor and disconnect the Red and Yellow (or White) wire coming from it. Note: Some Coleman models have a Start Relay; in these cases, remove the Yellow wire from the Start Capacitor and then the Red wire coming from the Start Relay.
- Connect the Blue soft start wire to the "H" terminal on the Run Capacitor.
- If there is an extra Reversing Valve connection wire going into the Start Capacitor, route the extra wire into the "C" terminal of the Run Capacitor.
- Locate the 3rd wire coming out of the Compressor overload switch (may be Blue or Black) and follow it to the Start Relay where it connects to the terminal with a Purple wire. Disconnect both wires and 3-way splice them with the final Black ICM soft start wire.
Model-Specific Wiring Notes
Depending on your specific Coleman model, wiring connections may vary:
- Units with a Freeze Switch: The Black (or Blue) wire from the Compressor goes into this switch, and only an orange and brown wire route back into the electric box. Connect the Purple power wire with the brown wire that comes from the switch. Make the connection at the junction of the Brown and Purple wire or anywhere convenient in the Brown wire from the switch.
- Units with a Freeze Sensor Board: If the electrical box contains a freeze sensor board, the Purple power wire and the Black Compressor wire will not join at a splice. In this case, splice the Black soft start wire and the Black (or Blue) Compressor wire anywhere convenient.
- Mach 8 Low Profile Models: A connection for the Black soft start wire may already exist on the same terminal as the Purple power wire. If not, 3-way splice the wires as per the original instructions.

Practical help
Common problems
Connect the Purple power wire to the brown wire coming from the switch instead of the standard splice.
Do not join the Purple power wire and Black Compressor wire; splice the Black soft start wire and the Black (or Blue) Compressor wire directly.
Check if a connection for the Black soft start wire already exists on the Purple power wire terminal before splicing.
Before use
- Identify your specific Coleman Mach model (1, 3, 3+, 10, 15, or 8)
- Locate the electrical box
- Identify the Run Capacitor terminals (C and H)
- Verify if your unit has a freeze switch or freeze sensor board
- Ensure power is disconnected before starting installation
Model compatibility
- Compatible with Coleman Mach 1, 3, 3+, 10, 15
- ICM soft start replaces the Start Capacitor and Start Relay
