This manual provides essential instructions for the safe operation and maintenance of your Craftsman 900 Series 14-Inch Rear Tine Tiller (Model 944.629663). Always read and follow all safety rules before operating the equipment. The tiller is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester.
Safety Rules
- Never allow children to operate the equipment.
- Keep the area of operation clear of all persons and pets.
- Always wear safety glasses or eye shields before starting and while tilling.
- Disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance, adjustments, or repairs to prevent accidental starting.
- Never run the engine indoors; exhaust fumes are dangerous.
- Handle fuel with care; it is highly flammable. Never add fuel to a running or hot engine.
Assembly
Your tiller is partially assembled at the factory. Required tools include a socket wrench set, utility knife, wire cutter, screwdriver, tire pressure gauge, and pliers. Follow the detailed steps in the manual to install the handle assembly, connect the shift rod, and attach the cable clip. Ensure all hardware is tightened securely.

Operation
Familiarize yourself with the controls before starting:

- Drive Control Bar: Used to engage tines.
- Shift Lever: Used to shift transmission gears (Forward, Neutral, Reverse).
- Throttle Control: Controls engine speed.
- Choke Control: Used when starting a cold engine.
- Depth Stake: Controls the depth at which the tiller digs.
To start the engine, ensure the spark plug wire is connected, the shift lever is in Neutral, the throttle is in the Fast position, and the choke is engaged. Pull the recoil starter handle quickly. Once started, gradually move the choke to the Run position.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for performance and longevity:

- Before Each Use: Check engine oil level, check tine operation, and check for loose fasteners.
- Every 5 Hours: Check engine oil level.
- Every 25 Hours: Clean or replace air cleaner cartridge.
- Every 50 Hours: Change engine oil, clean engine cylinder fins, replace spark plug, and lubricate the right-hand gear case grease fitting.
Use SAE 30 oil for temperatures above 32°F (0°C) and SAE 5w30 for temperatures below 32°F (0°C).
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues, consult the troubleshooting section. Common problems include the engine not starting (check fuel, spark plug wire, air cleaner), loss of power (check depth stake, oil level, air cleaner), or the engine overheating (check oil, air screen, muffler). If the tines will not rotate, check for broken shear pins.
Storage
Prepare the tiller for storage if it will not be used for 30 days or more. Drain the fuel tank, run the engine until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty, and perform necessary maintenance like changing the oil and cleaning the unit. Store in a dry, protected area.
