Quick guide from the manual
This document provides essential instructions for the Danfoss ABNM A5 proportional thermal actuator, designed for use with AB-QM valves (DN 10-32). Key procedures include physical mounting, electrical wiring, the first-time unlocking process for NC (Normally Closed) versions, and understanding the auto-calibration cycle.
Mounting and demounting
The actuator is designed for easy installation on the Danfoss AB-QM VA41 valve. Ensure the device is installed correctly to maintain its IP54 rating.
- Place the actuator onto the valve adapter.
- Press down until you hear a click, confirming it is securely locked.
- To demount, press the release mechanism and pull the actuator upwards.
- The device maintains an IP54 rating in any position, provided the cable is properly plugged in.
Electrical connection
The actuator operates on 24V (AC or DC, depending on the specific type). Wiring requirements are as follows:
- 0-10 V (DC) +: Red wire
- 0: Blue wire
- Common/Ground: Black wire
Unlock NC version (First Open Function)
For NC versions, the actuator must be unlocked before initial use:
- Power on the device for more than 6 minutes to allow the internal mechanism to retract approximately 8.3 mm.
- After the initial power-on, the actuator will operate within a range of approximately 0.5 mm to 3 mm.
Auto calibration
The ABNM A5 performs an automatic calibration to detect open and close points. The process follows this timeline:
- 0-6 minutes: Unlocking phase (for NC versions).
- 6-30 minutes: Auto-calibration phase to detect valve end positions.
- After 8 hours: The device stores the calibration values.
The actuator is suitable for ambient temperatures between 0°C (32°F) and 60°C (140°F).

Common problems
Ensure the 24V power supply is correctly connected and that the NC version has completed the initial 6-minute unlock cycle.
The device requires 8 hours of operation to permanently store calibration values.
Before use
- Verify the valve is an AB-QM DN 10-32 model.
- Confirm the power supply is 24V AC or DC as per the specific actuator type.
- Ensure the cable is fully plugged in to maintain IP54 protection.
- Check that the ambient temperature is between 0°C and 60°C.
Specs in practice
- 0-10 V Proportional
- The actuator position is controlled by a 0-10V DC signal.
Model compatibility
- Compatible with AB-QM valves DN 10-32 (1/2 - 1 1/4 inch).
- Requires VA41 adapter for proper fitment.
