Danfoss Underfloor Heating System Installation and Specification Guide

A comprehensive guide for the installation and specification of Danfoss DEVI underfloor heating systems, including heating mats, cables, and compatible thermostats.

Table of contents

Important Information for Installation

This document provides the technical specifications and installation requirements for Danfoss DEVI underfloor heating systems. All systems must be installed, tested, and commissioned in strict accordance with the design plans and the DEVI application manual. Installation should be coordinated with relevant sub-contractors and performed by trained specialists or under periodic supervision by the manufacturer.

Underfloor Heating Mats

Heating mats are available in two primary configurations based on the installation environment:

  • Tile Adhesive Layer: Low-profile mats consisting of thin heating cable on self-adhesive glass fibre mesh. Thickness is no more than 4mm. Available in sizes 0.5-12m² with heat outputs of 70-200W/m².
  • Concrete Embedded: Robust twin conductor heating cables. Available in sizes 1.1-15.6m² with heat outputs of 100-175W/m². These must be covered by a minimum of 50mm of concrete.

All mats are twin conductor type to ensure negligible electromagnetic field generation and are pre-terminated with a power supply cable.

Underfloor Heating Cables

Heating cables are designed for direct burial in concrete and harsh installation environments. They are available in fixed lengths ranging from 7m to 410m, with heat outputs between 6-20 W/m. All cables are twin conductor type with continuous full screening.

Control Systems (Thermostats)

The system supports several programmable digital timer thermostats, all of which are dual-sensor operated:

  • DEVIreg Smart: Features WiFi connectivity, multi-user app control (up to 100 thermostats), adaptive pulse width modulation (PWM), and energy consumption readouts.
  • DEVIreg Touch: Features a large touchscreen display, built-in setup wizard, adaptive PWM, and energy-saving programs.
  • DEVIreg Room: A button-operated thermostat featuring PWM regulation, open window detection, and an energy-saving program.

Electrical Connection

All electrical connections must be performed by an approved electrical contractor. The system requires specific circuit protection:

  • MCB: BS EN 60898 type C.
  • RCD: 30mA sensitivity, tripping within 100ms.

Common problems

Concrete coverage insufficient

Ensure concrete-embedded mats are covered by a minimum of 50mm of concrete.

Electrical protection missing

The circuit must be protected by an MCB (BS EN 60898 type C) and an RCD (30mA sensitivity, tripping within 100ms).

Installation errors

Systems must be installed by trained specialists or under periodic supervision by the manufacturer.

Before use

  • Verify design plans for the specific heating mat or cable layout.
  • Ensure concrete coverage is at least 50mm for concrete-embedded mats.
  • Confirm electrical supply is protected by an MCB (BS EN 60898 type C).
  • Verify RCD sensitivity is 30mA with tripping within 100ms.
  • Ensure the thermostat is compatible with the heating system.

Specs in practice

MCB (BS EN 60898 type C)
Required circuit breaker protection for the heating system.
Twin Conductor
Cable design to ensure negligible electromagnetic field generation.

Model compatibility

  • Thermostats are dual-sensor operated.
  • DEVIreg Smart supports WiFi and multi-user app control.
  • Concrete embedded mats must comply with IEC EN 60800-2009.
