Quick guide from the manual

The Electro-Harmonix DELUXE MEMORY BOY is a true analog delay pedal. Important: The unit requires an Electro-Harmonix 9.6DC-200BI power supply (9.6 Volts DC 200mA, center negative). The device does not take batteries. Using the wrong adapter may damage the unit and void the warranty.

Controls and Indicators

The pedal features several knobs to shape your sound:

  • DELAY Knob: Sets delay time from 34 mS to 700 mS. Turning this knob overrides any previously tapped tempo.
  • FEEDBACK Knob: Controls the number of echoes. Setting to maximum causes self-oscillation.
  • DEPTH Knob: Sets the amount of modulation. The center detent is the off position. Counter-clockwise adds triangle wave modulation; clockwise adds square wave modulation.
  • RATE Knob: Sets the speed of modulation.
  • GAIN Knob: Adjusts input gain from -6 dB to +20 dB.
  • BLEND Knob: Mixes between dry and wet signals (100% dry to 100% wet).

Switches and LEDs

  • BYPASS Footswitch: Toggles between effect and true bypass modes.
  • TAP Footswitch: Used to tap in the delay time. The pedal averages the tempo if tapped more than twice.
  • BEAT LED: Blinks at the rate of the current delay time.
  • TAP DIVIDE Button: Cycles through six settings to divide the tap tempo (Quarter note, Dotted 8th, Quarter triplet, 8th note, 8th triplet, 16th note).

Advanced Modes

Tap Divide Sequence Mode: An easter egg feature that automatically cycles through the six tap divide modes. To use: tap in a delay time, hold the TAP DIVIDE button for 2 seconds to enter, turn the RATE knob to change sequence speed, and hold the button again for 2 seconds to exit.

Low Cut Mode: A high-pass filter to remove bass from the delayed signal. Press and hold the EXP. MODE button for 2 seconds to enter. Use the RATE knob to adjust bass roll-off. Press and release the EXP. MODE button to exit and save settings.

I/O and Expression Pedal

Effects Loop: Allows inserting other effects into the feedback path. Connect the SEND jack to the input of your external effect and the RETURN jack to the output of your external effect.

Expression Pedal Control: Allows external control over Rate, Depth, Feedback, or Delay time. Requires a TRS plug. Use the EXP. MODE button to select the parameter to control. The pedal sweeps from the minimum setting to the current knob position.

Practical help

Common problems

Effect sounds lo-fi

This occurs when the delay time is tapped in at the maximum setting of 1.5 seconds.

Modulation is not audible

Ensure the DEPTH knob is not set to the center detent (off position).

Tap tempo is ignored

Turning the DELAY knob after tapping in a tempo overrides the tap tempo setting.

Before use

  • Use only the provided 9.6V DC 200mA power supply.
  • Verify the power supply plug is center negative.
  • Do not attempt to use batteries.
  • Connect your instrument to the INPUT jack.
  • Connect your amplifier to the OUTPUT jack.

Specs in practice

Input Impedance
1 MΩ.
Return Impedance
2 MΩ.

Model compatibility

  • Expression pedal requires a TRS plug.
  • Control voltage range is 0V to 5V.
  • Effects loop: Connect SEND to external effect input, RETURN to external effect output.
