Quick guide from the manual

The Electro-Harmonix MONO SYNTH is a monophonic instrument, meaning it processes only one note at a time. For optimal performance, it is recommended to place this pedal first in your effects chain. Always use the supplied 9V DC 125mA center-negative power supply to avoid damage. If the pedal behaves erratically, ensure you are playing only one note at a time and that no distortion or overdrive pedals are placed before the Mono Synth.

Getting started

To begin using your Mono Synth:

  • Connect the supplied power adapter to the 9V power jack.
  • Plug your instrument into the INPUT jack.
  • Connect your amplifier or other effects pedals to the SYNTH OUTPUT jack.
  • Set the DRY knob to minimum (fully counterclockwise) and set the other top row knobs to 12 o'clock.
  • Select a synth TYPE and step on the BYPASS footswitch to engage the effect (the LED will light up).

Controls and I/O

DRY VOL Knob: Controls the volume of the untreated input signal at the SYNTH OUTPUT jack.

SYNTH VOL Knob: Controls the overall volume of the synthesizer sound.

SENS Knob: Adjusts the input signal gain before the trigger block. The LED lights orange when the input signal exceeds -4.6dB. Use this as a guide: if notes do not trigger, turn up SENS; if you hear false triggers, turn down SENS.

CTRL Knob: Controls a specific parameter for each synth type.

INPUT Jack: Connect your instrument or previous effects pedal here.

DRY OUTPUT Jack: Provides a buffered version of the input signal, regardless of whether the effect is engaged or in bypass.

SYNTH OUTPUT Jack: Outputs the mix of dry and synth signals.

Synth types

The Mono Synth offers 11 distinct synthesizer sounds:

  • NU WAVE: Pulsating string-like synth.
  • UNISON: Stacking voices for a polyphonic synth sound.
  • BLAST: Aggressive and resonant synth.
  • TWIN: Throaty, dual filter sound.
  • BASS: Octave-down synth for low end.
  • XOX: Fast decaying synth.
  • WUB: Pulsating synth with modulating filter.
  • TINKER: Quirky synth for bell-like tones.
  • LAIR: Dramatic, expressive synth.
  • GHOST: Haunting tone with warbling modulation.
  • BLISTER: Piercing synth with added adjustable pitched note.

Presets

You can save and recall one preset for each of the eleven synth types.

  • Recalling: Turn the TYPE knob to the desired synth, then press and release the PRESET footswitch. The LED will turn red.
  • Saving: While in WYSIWYG or Preset mode, press and hold the PRESET footswitch for about 2 seconds until the LED blinks red rapidly. Release the switch to save.
  • Editing: If you move a knob after recalling a preset, the LED will blink red. Press and hold the PRESET footswitch to save your changes.

Factory reset

To restore all default presets:

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Press and hold the BYPASS footswitch while applying power.
  3. Continue holding until the LED toggles between red and green (approx. 4 seconds).
  4. Release the footswitch. The LED will light green and then shut off when complete.

Practical help

Common problems

Erratic or unpredictable tracking

Ensure you are playing only one note at a time. The pedal does not track chords or intervals correctly.

Synth not triggering

Increase the SENS knob setting. The input signal must exceed the trigger threshold.

False triggers or retriggers

Decrease the SENS knob setting.

Muddy input signal

Ensure no distortion or overdrive pedals are placed before the Mono Synth. Place them after the Mono Synth instead.

Before use

  • Use the supplied 9V DC 125mA center-negative power supply.
  • Place the Mono Synth first in your effects chain.
  • Connect instrument to INPUT jack.
  • Connect amp to SYNTH OUTPUT jack.
  • Set DRY knob to minimum initially.
  • Ensure you play only one note at a time.

Specs in practice

Input impedance
2.2MΩ (standard high-impedance input for instruments).
Output impedance
680Ω (for both output jacks).
Current draw
125mA (requires dedicated power supply).

Model compatibility

  • Expression pedal: Requires 10kΩ impedance (do not go below 6kΩ).
  • Expression pedal wiring: Sleeve to heel (GND), Ring to toe, Tip to wiper.
  • Control Voltage (CV): EXP IN jack accepts 0V to 5V via TS plug.
