The Electro-Harmonix Nano Big Muff Pi is a compact harmonic distortion-sustain pedal for electric guitar. This guide provides essential information on operation, power requirements, and maintenance.
Controls
- Sustain Control: Adjusts the amount of sustain and distortion.
- Tone Control: Adjusts the frequency range from high treble to deep bass. Turning clockwise increases treble and decreases bass.
- Volume Control: Sets the overall output level.
- Footswitch & Status LED: The footswitch toggles between effect and True Bypass modes. The LED lights up when the effect is active.
Connections
- Input Jack: 1/4" jack for audio input (130 kΩ impedance).
- AMP Jack: 1/4" jack for audio output. In Bypass mode, this is connected directly to the Input jack.
Power Requirements
The pedal can be powered by a 9V battery or an optional 9VDC AC Adapter. The adapter must be center negative and capable of delivering at least 25mA (e.g., EHX9.6DC-200). The current draw is approximately 3mA at 9VDC.
Changing the Battery
To replace the 9-volt battery:
- Remove the 4 screws on the bottom of the pedal.
- Remove the bottom plate.
- Replace the battery.
- Reattach the bottom plate.
Warning: Do not touch the circuit board while the bottom plate is removed to avoid damaging components.

Common problems
Check if the battery is dead or if the AC adapter is properly connected and providing power.
