Quick guide from the manual

The Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy (DXMB) is an analog delay pedal featuring tap tempo, modulation, an effects loop, and expression pedal control. This guide covers the essential operations, including setting delay times, using modulation, and configuring advanced modes like Low Cut and Tap Divide Sequence.

Controls and Indicators

The pedal features six primary knobs to shape your sound:

  • DELAY Knob: Sets delay time from 34 mS to 700 mS. Turning this knob overrides any previously tapped-in tempo.
  • FEEDBACK Knob: Controls the number of echoes. Maximum settings may cause self-oscillation.
  • DEPTH Knob: Sets the amount of modulation. The center detent is the 'off' position. Counter-clockwise adds triangle wave modulation; clockwise adds square wave modulation.
  • RATE Knob: Sets the speed of modulation. Also adjusts the low cut filter frequency when in Low Cut mode.
  • GAIN Knob: Adjusts input gain from -6 dB to +20 dB.
  • BLEND Knob: Mixes the dry and wet signals. Full clockwise is 100% wet; full counter-clockwise is 100% dry.

Switches and LEDs

  • BYPASS Footswitch: Toggles between effect mode and true bypass. The red STATUS LED indicates effect mode.
  • TAP Footswitch: Used to tap in the delay time. Stomp twice to set the tempo.
  • TAP DIVIDE Button: Cycles through six settings to divide the tap tempo into rhythmic subdivisions (e.g., dotted eighth, quarter note triplet).
  • EXP. MODE Button: Cycles through expression pedal modes (RATE, DEPTH, FEEDBACK, DELAY, OFF) and enters/exits Low Cut mode.

Advanced Modes

Low Cut Mode

This mode applies a high-pass filter to remove bass from the delayed signal.

  1. Press and hold the EXP. MODE button for 2 seconds.
  2. All four EXP. MODE LEDs will light up.
  3. Use the RATE knob to adjust the amount of bass roll-off.
  4. Press and release the EXP. MODE button to exit and save the setting.

Tap Divide Sequence Mode

This mode automatically cycles through the six tap divide settings.

  1. Tap in a delay time.
  2. Press and hold the TAP DIVIDE button for 2 seconds until all LEDs light up.
  3. Turn the RATE knob to change the sequence speed.
  4. Hold the TAP DIVIDE button for 2 seconds to exit.

Expression Pedal Control

The DXMB allows external control over RATE, DEPTH, FEEDBACK, or DELAY. Connect an expression pedal with a TRS plug to the EXP. PEDAL jack. Use the EXP. MODE button to select the parameter to control. The selected knob on the pedal sets the maximum sweep range (toe-down position).

Effects Loop

The effects loop allows you to insert other effects into the feedback path of the delay block. Connect the SEND jack to the input of your external effect and the RETURN jack to the output of your external effect. If not using the loop, leave the RETURN jack disconnected.

Power and Connections

The DXMB requires 9V DC at 100mA with a center-negative plug. Use the supplied Electro-Harmonix 9.6DC-200BI power supply. The pedal does not accept batteries.

Practical help

Common problems

Delay time is ignored after tapping

Turning the DELAY knob after tapping in a tempo overrides the tap setting. To use tap tempo, do not touch the DELAY knob after tapping.

No modulation effect heard

Ensure the DEPTH knob is not set to the center detent (off) position.

Bass frequencies are missing from the delay

Check if Low Cut mode is active (indicated by EXP. MODE LEDs). Exit Low Cut mode by pressing the EXP. MODE button.

Before use

  • Use only the supplied 9.6V DC 200mA center-negative power supply.
  • Ensure the pedal is in effect mode (red STATUS LED is on).
  • Connect your instrument to the INPUT jack.
  • Connect the OUTPUT jack to your amplifier or next pedal.
  • If using an expression pedal, ensure it has a TRS plug.

Specs in practice

Input Impedance
1 MΩ.
Return Impedance
2 MΩ.

Model compatibility

  • Requires 9V DC center-negative power supply.
  • Expression pedal must have a TRS plug.
  • Effects loop requires separate send/return cables.
