Comprehensive owner's manual for the Origin Effects Halcyon Blue Overdrive pedal. Includes setup instructions, control explanations, adaptive circuitry guide, and technical specifications.

Table of contents

Quick guide from the manual

The Halcyon Blue Overdrive is an effects pedal inspired by the classic Marshall Bluesbreaker, featuring proprietary Adaptive Circuitry. This circuitry allows the pedal's boosted midrange to gradually fade away as the pedal cleans up, responding to your playing dynamics and volume knob adjustments. The pedal is designed for use with musical instruments featuring electromagnetic pickups.

Safety Notices

General Safety: Do not use the apparatus near water. Clean only with a dry cloth. Do not install near heat sources such as radiators or stoves. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.

Power Supply: This product is designed to be powered from a 9VDC, >200mA power supply with a 2.1mm center-negative barrel connector. Using an incorrectly rated power supply can damage the pedal and the power supply.

Hearing Safety: High volume levels on speakers, headphones, or amplifiers can cause temporary or permanent hearing impairment. Do not operate at high volume levels for extended periods.

Rubber Feet: The plasticizer in the rubber feet may react with floor coatings, causing permanent dark stains. Use a suitable mat if necessary.

Connecting the Halcyon Blue Overdrive

  • 9VDC: Connect a 9VDC 2.1mm center-negative mains power adaptor (minimum 200mA).
  • INSTR: Connect your guitar cable here.
  • AMP: Connect to your amplifier or modeller.

Controls

ADAPT Switch: Enables the Adaptive Circuitry.

  • Position O: No adaptive behavior; functions like the original Bluesbreaker.
  • Position II: Full adaptive behavior. Midrange emphasis reduces as the pedal cleans up, reintroducing rolled-off bass and treble.
  • Position I: Less adaptive than position II. Maintains some bass and treble roll-off, useful for keeping low end tight with high-gain tones.

VOICE Switch: Selects between the classic Bluesbreaker tone (BB mode) or a modded voicing (MOD mode) with higher gain and warmer frequency response.

DRIVE: Increases the amount of overdrive. Lower settings are ideal for boosting an amp on the edge of breakup.

LEVEL: Sets the output level. Turn clockwise to push the input of your amplifier.

TONE: Adjusts high-end response. Turn counterclockwise for a warmer lead tone or clockwise for a brighter, cutting tone.

DRY: Adjusts the level of the unaffected dry signal. Turn clockwise to increase the dry signal ratio for more dynamics and clarity. Turn fully counterclockwise to remove the dry signal entirely for a compressed, overdriven tone.

Sample Settings

The manual provides four recommended settings to get started:

  • Blues Boost: Low-gain drive with extra responsiveness.
  • Modded Lead: Rich, cutting lead tone for humbuckers into a clean amp.
  • Crunchy Rhythm: Powerful, mid-gain 90s overdrive sound.
  • Smooth & Warm: Boutique overdrive sound with extra warmth and smoother clipping.

Technical Specifications

  • Input Impedance: 1M Ohm
  • Output Impedance: 1k Ohm
  • Current Draw: 200mA
  • Power Requirements: 9VDC 2.1mm center-negative connector

Warranty

This product is covered by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase for original purchasers who bought from an authorized dealer or directly from Origin Effects. All returns or servicing should be arranged through the original dealer.

Practical help

Common problems

Device damage due to incorrect power

Ensure you are using a 9VDC, >200mA power supply with a 2.1mm center-negative barrel connector.

Hearing impairment

Do not operate the device at high volume levels for extended periods; decrease volume immediately if you experience ringing in your ears.

Dark stains on floor

The rubber feet may react with floor coatings. Use a suitable mat to prevent direct contact between the feet and the floor.

Before use

  • Verify power supply is 9VDC, >200mA, center-negative.
  • Connect instrument to the INSTR jack.
  • Connect amplifier to the AMP jack.
  • Start with volume levels low to prevent hearing damage.
  • Ensure the pedal is placed on a suitable surface to avoid staining.

Specs in practice

Input impedance (1M Ohm)
High impedance input suitable for electromagnetic pickups.
Output impedance (1k Ohm)
Standard output impedance for connecting to amplifiers or modellers.
Current draw (200mA)
Minimum power supply current required for stable operation.

Model compatibility

  • Designed for use with musical instruments featuring electromagnetic pickups.
  • Compatible with standard 9VDC pedal power supplies meeting the 200mA minimum requirement.
