The Wampler Cryptid is a fuzz pedal designed to offer a wide range of fuzz textures. This guide provides essential information on how to operate the controls, power the unit correctly, and achieve specific tones using suggested settings.

Controls

The pedal features several knobs and switches to shape your sound:

• Volume: Controls the total output volume. Turn clockwise to increase.
• Tone: Adjusts high-end frequencies. Turn clockwise to increase high-end.
• Fuzz: Adjusts the amount of fuzz. Turn clockwise to increase.
• Character: Adjusts bias and sputter.
• Chime: Adjusts brightness. Up is bright, middle is dark, down is stock. This control is dependent on the Fuzz control setting.
• Tight: Adjusts bass response. Up is bass heavy, middle is tighter, down is stock.

Power Requirements

To ensure proper operation and avoid damage:

• Use a 9-18V DC power source intended for guitar pedals.
• Do not exceed 18V DC.
• Do not use center-pin positive adapters.
• Do not use AC power.
• The pedal draws approximately 15mA at 9V and 30mA at 18V.

Tips and Tricks

• Character Knob: Works like a bias control. Counterclockwise tightens the sound; clockwise loosens it for a spitty, gated effect.
• Chime Switch: Adjusts highs before clipping. It acts similarly to a presence control. Note that with the Fuzz control all the way up, the Chime switch has no effect.
• Tight Switch: Adjusts bass levels. Middle position provides the least bass, down is moderate, and up is the most bass.
• Signal Chain: For best response, avoid using buffered bypass pedals before the Cryptid.

• Germanium Fuzz Face: Classic vintage fuzz sounds.
• Silicon BC108: A different style of Fuzz Face.
• Muff Fuzz: Style with more mids.
• Misbiased Tone Bender: A specific type of fuzz character.
• Velvet Fuzz Redux: For those who prefer non-traditional fuzz.
• Chimey SRV: Requires no buffer in front, roll guitar volume back, and switch to neck pickup.
