Quick Guide from the Manual
The Sealey TST22 is a 12V 13-pin towing socket tester designed for use in testing stations on vehicle classes 4, 5, and 7. It allows for quick and simple testing of Euro-type sockets fitted to the rear of a vehicle. The unit is powered by the vehicle's 12V supply and includes a 4.9m cable, allowing the operator to perform tests while sitting inside the vehicle. It also includes a 13 to 7-pin adaptor for older wiring systems.
Safety Precautions
- Do not use the tester if it or any attachment is damaged.
- Do not get the tester wet, submerge it in liquid, or use it in damp/wet locations.
- Do not expose the tester to bright sunlight or dust.
- Do not disassemble the tester; it must be checked by qualified service personnel only.
- Do not connect or disconnect test equipment with the engine running.
- Keep the tester clean, dry, and free from oil, water, and grease. Use a dry cotton cloth for cleaning.
- Store in a safe, dry, childproof location when not in use.
Operation

- Connection: Lift the vehicle’s towing socket cover and insert the tester’s plug. Ensure it is aligned correctly, then twist the outer plug ring clockwise to lock it into place.
- Continuous Power Check: If the socket is wired for a continuous 12V supply, the 12V CONTINUOUS LED will illuminate. Note that this is not a condition of the MOT test.
- Self-Test: Sit in the vehicle with the tester unit and press the 'Test' button to ensure the control circuitry and LEDs are working.
- Ignition Check: Turn the vehicle's ignition switch to the 'ON' position (do not start the engine). The 12V IGNITION LED should illuminate.
- MOT Required Checks: Operate the following in turn and check that the corresponding LED illuminates on the tester:
- Left and Right Hand Indicators
- Side Lights
- Fog Lights
- Foot brake pedal
- Reverse Check: Select reverse gear and check that the REVERSE LED illuminates.
- Removal: When checks are complete, twist the plug ring anti-clockwise, ease the plug out of the socket, and replace the towing socket cover.
Troubleshooting and Notes
Flickering LEDs: When testing vehicles with a tow-bar electrics self-test facility, the tester's LEDs (apart from the 12V feed) may flicker. This is normal. The LEDs will light fully when voltage is applied to each of the 13 pins.
Self-Test Limitation: The self-test facility is not available when using the 13-7 pin towing adaptor because there is no continuous feed via the 7-pin socket.
Maintenance and Disposal
The product should be kept clean and dry. At the end of its working life, dispose of the product in compliance with the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and local recycling regulations.

Practical help
Common problems
The self-test facility is not available when using the 13-7 pin towing adaptor because there is no continuous feed via the 7-pin socket.
This is normal when testing vehicles with a tow-bar electrics self-test facility. The LEDs will light fully when voltage is applied to the pins.
Before use
- Ensure the tester and cable are clean, dry, and undamaged.
- Ensure the vehicle ignition is in the 'ON' position (do not start the engine).
- If testing an older system, ensure the 13 to 7-pin adaptor is attached.
- Ensure the work area is clean and well-lit.
Specs in practice
- 12V Continuous LED
- Indicates if the socket is wired for a continuous 12V supply (not an MOT requirement).
- 12V Ignition LED
- Indicates if the ignition live feed is active.
Images and diagrams
- The tester control panel features LEDs for LH/RH Indicators, Side Lights, Fog Lights, Brake Light, Reverse, 12V Ignition, and 12V Continuous, along with a 'Test' button.
Model compatibility
- Designed for 12V 13-pin Euro-type sockets.
- Approved for use in testing stations on vehicle classes 4, 5, and 7.
