Table of contents

Product Overview

The Sealey WST series (WST1500, WST3000, WST5000) are single-phase portable transformers designed to convert 230V mains power to 110V for use with power tools and lighting. These units are built with a GRP case, feature class H insulation, and are equipped with thermostatic overload protection to ensure safe operation.

Safety Information

Electrical Safety: It is the user's responsibility to ensure all equipment is safe before use. Always inspect power leads, plugs, and connections for wear or damage. Sealey recommends using an RCD (Residual Current Device) with all electrical products. If the transformer is used for business, it must be maintained in a safe condition and undergo routine PAT (Portable Appliance Test) testing.

General Safety: Ensure the transformer is placed on a surface that will not be damaged by heat, as it is normal for the unit to warm up during operation. Keep the area clear of children and unauthorized persons. Do not exceed the rated capacity of the transformer, and never use it for purposes other than those for which it was designed.

Operation

The transformer should be plugged directly into a 230V mains socket; avoid using extension leads between the mains and the transformer. If an extension lead is required, it should be connected between the transformer and the tool. The unit is not double-insulated, so it is critical that the power socket used is reliably and permanently earthed. If the temperature-sensitive cut-out switch trips due to overheating, allow the unit to cool before pressing the reset button located on the side of the unit.

Maintenance and Disposal

Always disconnect the transformer from the mains before performing any maintenance. Keep the unit clean for optimal performance. If parts are damaged, replace them only with genuine Sealey parts. At the end of its working life, the product must be disposed of in compliance with WEEE regulations. Contact your local waste authority for recycling information.

Common problems

Transformer overheating and shutting down

Allow the unit to cool down, identify and rectify the cause of overheating, then press the reset button located on the side of the unit.

Fuse failure at switch-on

Tool transformers can draw high initial current. Ensure you are using a 13A anti-surge type fuse.

Before use

  • Inspect power supply leads, plugs, and connections for wear or damage.
  • Ensure the voltage rating on the appliance matches the transformer output.
  • Verify the power socket is reliably and permanently earthed.
  • Ensure the transformer is placed on a heat-resistant surface.
  • Check that the plug is fitted with the correct 13A fuse.

Specs in practice

Continuous rating (VA)
The maximum power the transformer can supply for continuous operation (900VA to 2800VA depending on model).
Intermittent Duty
The transformer is rated for 5 minutes of operation followed by 30 minutes of rest.

Model compatibility

  • Not double-insulated; requires a reliably earthed mains supply.
  • Do not use with extension leads between the mains and the transformer.
  • WST5000 includes an additional 32A/110V socket compared to other models.
