Quick guide from the manual

This workshop manual provides technical information and repair procedures for the Volkswagen 02E 6-speed dual clutch gearbox. Key safety and operational requirements include:

  • Cleanliness: Always ensure no dirt enters an open gearbox. Use lint-free cloths and cover exposed components.
  • Electrostatic Discharge: Before working on electrical components, touch an earthed object (e.g., a water pipe) to discharge static electricity.
  • Oil Handling: Use only genuine dual clutch gearbox oil. Do not mix additives. Dispose of used oil properly.
  • Bolt Replacement: Always renew self-locking bolts and nuts.

Gearbox Identification

The gearbox code letters are essential for ordering genuine parts. The code is located on the gearbox housing and can also be found on the vehicle data stickers. If the sticker is missing or the gearbox does not match, the code can be read directly from the gearbox.

Clutch Service

The 02E gearbox uses a multi-clutch system. Assembly requires special care as components are balanced during manufacture. Genuine clutches are supplied with a built-in retaining ring to prevent parts from rotating relative to each other. Always refer to the specific installation procedure when replacing the clutch.

Controls and Housing

This section covers the mechatronic unit (J743), oil cooler, and oil pump. When removing the mechatronic unit, ensure the gearbox is cool to prevent the unit from sticking on dowel pins. When reinstalling, follow the specified bolt tightening sequence (1 through 10) to ensure proper seating.

Oil and Filter Change

The oil and filter should be changed at the specified service intervals. The procedure requires the gearbox to be at a specific temperature (below 50 °C for draining, 35 °C to 45 °C for final level adjustment). An overflow tube is used to set the correct oil level.

Selector Mechanism

The selector lever cable must be adjusted whenever the cable, gearbox, or selector mechanism has been removed. The adjustment involves setting the selector lever to the 'P' position and ensuring the cable is free of tension before tightening the adjusting screw.

Practical help

Common problems

Touch function does not work / no gear change

Check the securing clip on the cable support bracket of the selector lever cable. If the clip has lost its tension, it must be replaced.

Inadequate power transfer

Check for insufficient fluid. Top up only after confirming a leak has been repaired.

Gearbox emergency running mode

Indicated by simultaneous illumination of all selector lever position display segments. The vehicle cannot reverse; the gearbox must be repaired.

Before use

  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface.
  • Touch an earthed object before handling electrical components.
  • Have a suitable oil collection unit (e.g., V.A.G 1782) ready.
  • Verify the oil temperature is below 50 °C before starting the oil change.
  • Ensure the selector lever is in the 'P' position.

Images and diagrams

  • The gearbox overview (page 7) identifies key components like the filter, drain plug, and mechatronic unit.
  • The mechatronic unit bolt sequence (page 39) must be followed exactly during installation.
  • The selector mechanism diagram (page 64) shows the routing and components of the selector lever cable.

Model compatibility

  • Applicable to Golf Variant (2007, 2010) and Jetta (2005, 2011) models equipped with the 02E gearbox.
