Quick guide from the manual
The Wagner Opti-Stain Sprayer is designed for household use with materials having a flashpoint above 100°F (38°C). This guide covers essential setup, operation, and maintenance. Always ensure the unit is unplugged before assembly or maintenance. For technical support, contact Wagner at 1-800-328-8251 or visit www.wagnerpraytech.com.
Material Preparation
Proper thinning is crucial for optimal performance. Use the viscosity cup to measure the runout time of your material:
- Stir the material thoroughly.
- Dip the viscosity cup into the material and time how long it takes to empty.
- Compare the time against the thinning chart provided in the manual (e.g., Oil enamel: 25-40s, Varnish: 20-50s).
- Do not thin materials with a flashpoint below 100°F.
Assembly
- Insert the suction tube into the intake opening.
- Align the suction tube based on your spraying direction (angled end forward for downward spraying, rearward for upward spraying).
- Screw the material cup onto the nozzle assembly firmly.
- Align the arrow on the nozzle with the unlock symbol on the turbine, then twist toward the lock symbol to secure.
Spraying
Adjust the spray pattern by turning the air cap ears to horizontal, vertical, or diagonal positions. Maintain a distance of 6 to 12 inches from the surface and move the gun parallel to the surface with consistent speed. Always trigger the gun after the pass has begun and release before stopping.
Cleanup
Flush the unit immediately after use:
- Unplug the unit and loosen the container by 1/2 turn to relieve pressure.
- Empty remaining material, then fill the cup with the appropriate cleaning solution (warm soapy water for latex, mineral spirits for oil-based).
- Spray the solution into a waste container until clean.
- Disassemble the nozzle and air cap to clean individual parts with a brush.
Maintenance
Inspect air filters in the turbine regularly; replace if dirty. Never operate the unit without filters. If material enters the air tube, remove the tube, clean the valve seal, and reassemble carefully.

Practical help
Common problems
Check for clogged nozzle, loose suction tube, or incorrect material thickness. Ensure the air vent on the suction tube is clear.
Tighten the nozzle or check if the nozzle seal is missing or worn.
Decrease material flow setting or increase movement speed of the spray gun.
Refill the container or reconnect the air valve tube.
Before use
- Ensure the power source is a grounded 120V outlet.
- Verify material flashpoint is above 100°F (38°C).
- Check that air filters are clean and installed.
- Test material viscosity using the provided cup.
- Ensure the suction tube is oriented correctly for the intended spray direction.
Model compatibility
- Household use only.
- Use only with water-based or mineral spirit-type materials.
- Requires a grounded 3-wire extension cord if used outdoors.
