Quick guide from the manual

The DigiTech Red Special Pedal is a modeling device designed to replicate Brian May's iconic guitar tones. Before use, ensure you have the included PS0913B power supply, as the pedal does not support battery power. Connect your guitar to the input and the pedal output to your amplifier or mixer. Use the Model knob to select one of the seven built-in tones and engage them using the toe or heel switch on the expression pedal.

Setup Directions

  1. Turn down the volume on your amplifier or mixer.
  2. Connect the pedal output to your amplifier or mixer input.
  3. Connect your guitar to the pedal input.
  4. Connect the included PS0913B power supply to the pedal.
  5. Adjust your amplifier or mixer volume to the desired level.
  6. Press the toe or heel switch on the expression pedal to engage or bypass the selected model.

Note: For the best results with the built-in treble booster, plug your guitar directly into the pedal rather than placing it at the end of an effects chain.

Control Descriptions

FS3X Footswitch controls
FS3X Footswitch controls
  • Gain/Level: Adjusts the input gain and output level.
  • Treble/Bass: Adjusts the high and low-frequency response.
  • Control/Guitar: The Control knob function depends on the selected model. The Guitar knob (outer ring) uses modeling technology to match your guitar's pickups (SC for single-coil, HB for humbucker, or Red Special for replicas).
  • Indicator LED: Shows the current mode (Off=Bypass, Green=Toe mode, Red=Heel mode).

Flexible Output Modes

The pedal offers three output modes:

  • Mode 1 (Mono): Default when one cable is connected to either output.
  • Mode 2 (Stereo Mixer): Default stereo mode when two cables are connected.
  • Mode 3 (Stereo Amp): Enabled via the Flexible Output Mode Setup.

To configure, select Model 7, hold the heel switch for three seconds until the LED flashes yellow, turn the Model knob to 6 (Stereo Amp) or 7 (Stereo Mixer), and press the toe switch to exit.

Calibrating the Expression Pedal

If the pedal's range diminishes, follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect power.
  2. Select Model 1.
  3. Insert a mono cable into the Footswitch jack.
  4. Connect power; the LED will flash yellow.
  5. Rock the pedal forward (toe down).
  6. Select Model 2; wait for the LED to flash green.
  7. Rock the pedal back (toe up).
  8. Select Model 3; the LED will flash green three times if successful.

Safety

Do not expose the unit to water or moisture. Do not block ventilation openings. There are no user-serviceable parts inside; refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
