Quick guide from the manual

The Electro-Harmonix Mono Synth is a monophonic instrument, meaning it synthesizes one note at a time. For optimal performance, place the pedal first in your effects chain. To get started, connect the supplied 9.6V DC 200mA center-negative power adapter to the power jack. Plug your instrument into the INPUT jack and your amplifier into the SYNTH OUTPUT jack. Set the DRY knob to minimum and other top row knobs to 12 o'clock. Select a synth type and press the BYPASS footswitch to engage the effect.

Controls and I/O Jacks

DRY VOL Knob: Controls the volume of the untreated input signal at the SYNTH OUTPUT jack.

SYNTH VOL Knob: Controls the overall volume of the synthesizer sound.

SENS Knob: Adjusts the input signal gain before the trigger block. Use the LED as a guide; it lights orange when the input signal exceeds -4.6dB. If notes do not trigger, increase SENS. If you hear false triggers, decrease SENS.

CTRL Knob: Controls a specific parameter for each synth type.

INPUT Jack: Connect your instrument or other effects pedals here.

DRY OUTPUT Jack: Provides a buffered version of the input signal, regardless of effect or bypass mode.

SYNTH OUTPUT Jack: Outputs the mix of dry and synth signals.

EXP Jack: Accepts a TRS cable from a passive expression pedal or a TS cable for control voltage (0V to 5V).

Presets

The Mono Synth allows you to save and recall one preset for each of the eleven synth types.

  • Recalling a Preset: Turn the TYPE knob to the desired synth type. If the LED is green, press the PRESET footswitch to recall the preset (LED turns red).
  • Saving a Preset: While in WYSIWYG or Preset mode, press and hold the PRESET footswitch for about 2 seconds until the LED blinks red rapidly. Release the switch to save.
  • Editing a Preset: After recalling a preset, adjust any of the four top knobs. The LED will blink red. To save the changes, press and hold the PRESET footswitch until the LED blinks rapidly.

Factory Reset

To restore all default presets:

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Press and hold the BYPASS footswitch while applying power.
  3. Continue holding until the LED toggles between red and green (usually takes 4 seconds).
  4. Release the footswitch. Do not remove power.
  5. After 4-5 seconds, the LED will light green and then shut off, indicating the reset is complete.

Tips for Optimum Performance

  • Signal Chain: Place the Mono Synth first in your effects chain. Placing it in an amp's effects loop or after distortion/overdrive pedals may cause unstable tracking.
  • Monophonic Operation: Play only one note at a time. The unit will behave erratically if chords or two-note intervals are played.
  • SENS Adjustment: You may need to adjust the SENS knob for each synth type, as they react differently to the input gain.

Practical help

Common problems

Synth behaves erratically or unpredictably.

Ensure you are playing only one note at a time. The Mono Synth is a monophonic instrument and cannot process chords.

Notes do not trigger the synth.

Turn up the SENS knob to increase the input gain sensitivity.

False triggers or retriggers.

Turn down the SENS knob.

Poor tracking or muddy signal.

Place the Mono Synth first in your effects chain. Avoid placing distortion or overdrive pedals before it.

Before use

  • Use the included 9.6V DC 200mA center-negative power supply.
  • Connect your guitar to the INPUT jack.
  • Connect your amplifier to the SYNTH OUTPUT jack.
  • Set the DRY knob to minimum (fully counterclockwise) to start.
  • Set top row knobs to 12 o'clock.
