Quick guide from the manual
The horizont 14494C trapper 6 Light is a portable fence tester designed to measure voltage levels in electric fence systems. It operates without batteries, drawing power directly from the fence pulse.
Voltage measurement
To measure the voltage, connect the device between the earth (using the integrated earth stake) and the fence wire (using the contact eye). The tester will display the approximate voltage level on the fence or directly at the energizer output.
- > 10.000 - 6.000 V: Very good
- 6.000 - 4.000 V: Good
- 4.000 - 2.000 V: Sufficient
- Low kv: Too low
According to VDE standards, voltage values above 2.000 V are considered safe and effective for fence operation. Higher voltage generally indicates a more secure fence system.
Identifying faults
The tester helps diagnose common fence issues:

- Voltage at the ground stake: If the tester detects voltage at the ground stake, it indicates reverse currents caused by leaks or discharges on the fence line. You should remove these leaks and improve grounding by adding more ground stakes.
- Faulty insulation: If the fence tester shows no result or indicates a significant drop in voltage, it may point to current discharge over iron poles due to defective insulation.

Practical help
Common problems
This indicates leaks on the fence line. Remove the leaks and improve the grounding system by adding additional ground stakes.
Check for faulty insulation or a complete break in the fence line causing current discharge over iron poles.
The fence system is not operating effectively. Check for vegetation touching the fence, damaged insulators, or poor connections.
Before use
- Ensure the fence energizer is turned on.
- Verify the earth stake is firmly inserted into the ground.
- Ensure the contact eye is securely touching the fence wire or tape.
- Check that the fence line is free of major obstructions.

Model compatibility
- Compatible with various fence materials including wire, braid, rope, and tape.
