The Cobra Hardwire Kit is designed to connect Micro USB powered devices, such as dash cams and radar detectors, directly to a vehicle's fuse box. This eliminates the need for a 12V accessory port and reduces dashboard clutter. Professional automotive installation is recommended to avoid damage to the vehicle or connected accessories. The kit includes low-voltage protection to prevent battery drain.
Installation Steps
Before beginning, ensure the vehicle is off and the key is removed from the ignition.
1. Positioning and Routing
Position your device on the windshield, ensuring it does not obstruct your view. Consult your vehicle's manual to locate the fuse panel. Run the hardwire kit cable from the device, around the windshield, and toward the fuse box. Coil any excess cable near the fuse box.
2. Power Source Selection
Decide whether to wire the device to a switched or un-switched fuse:
- Switched circuits: Only have power when the vehicle is ON.
- Un-switched circuits: Always have power.
Use a voltmeter to verify the fuse type.
3. Connecting to the Fuse Box
Pull the chosen fuse, wrap the exposed copper part of the red (+) wire around the fuse tooth, and re-insert the fuse.
4. Grounding
Locate a ground point near the fuse box. This is typically an obviously labeled ground point or a nut/bolt that connects directly to the car frame.
5. Power Management
Enable power using the included power supply box's ON/OFF switch. The power supply box should be left inside the vehicle for easy access and can be used to turn the system off when storing the vehicle for long periods.
Optional: Using Fuse Taps
If using fuse taps (sold separately):
- Ensure the vehicle is off and the key is removed.
- Determine the required fuse tap cable for your fuse box.
- Place the vehicle fuse into the fuse tap cable.
- Connect the input cable to the hardwire kit and crimp as needed. Ensure the connection is secure.
- Insert the fuse tap into the fuse box and tuck away excess cable.
