Dometic Rooftop Air Conditioner Installation and Operation Manual

Installation and operation guide for Dometic rooftop air conditioners with universal air distribution box and mechanical controls. Includes wiring, mounting, and maintenance instructions.

Table of contents

Important Information

This manual provides installation and operation instructions for Dometic rooftop air conditioners equipped with a Universal Air Distribution Box (ADB) and mechanical controls. The product is designed for installation on the roof of a Recreational Vehicle (RV). Ensure all safety guidelines are followed, and installation is performed by a qualified service person.

Safety Instructions

Always observe safety warnings to avoid electrical shock, fire, or explosion hazards. Ensure the RV is parked on a level surface before installation. The roof must be structurally sound and capable of supporting the unit. Always disconnect 115 VAC power and the positive 12 VDC terminal before drilling or cutting into the RV.

Installation

Preparing the Roof Opening

The roof opening must be structurally framed to support the unit. A 14.3 in. x 14.3 in. (363 mm x 363 mm) square opening is required. If using an existing vent, remove it and clean the area. If making a new opening, ensure it is located between rafters and does not compromise structural integrity.

Installing the Duct Divider

Measure the RV ceiling thickness and use the provided tables to determine how many rows to remove from the duct divider. Insert the duct divider into the roof opening, ensuring the foil backing faces the rear of the rooftop component.

Wiring the Unit

Route the 115 VAC supply wire to the roof opening. Plug the 6-pin electrical cord from the rooftop component into the matching connector in the control box. Connect the white and black wires using appropriate connectors and secure the bare copper wire under the grounding screw.

Securing the Unit

Use the four-bolt pattern to secure the ADB kit to the roof. Tighten the mounting bolts evenly to the specified torque (22.2 in. lbs for FreshJet; 40-50 in. lbs for other models). Overtightening can damage the base pan or ceiling template.

Operation

Controls and Settings

The selector switch has eight positions, including OFF, to control fan speeds, cooling modes, and optional heating. The thermostat control knob manages the compressor operation within a range of approximately 65–90 °F (18–32 °C). Wait at least two minutes before restarting the compressor if it has been manually cycled off.

Maintenance

Periodically (at least every two weeks) remove the return air filter located behind the return air vent grille and wash it with soap and warm water. Let it dry completely before reinstalling. Clean the ADB housing and control panel with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Never use furniture polish or scouring powders.

Troubleshooting

If the unit does not operate, check the circuit breaker and fuses. If the unit does not maintain temperature, ensure the RV is parked in the shade, use window shades, and keep doors and windows closed. If frost forms on the evaporator coil, inspect the filter, remove obstructions, and ensure vents are open.

Practical help

Common problems

Product does not operate

Check if the circuit breaker has activated or if a fuse has blown. Reset or replace as necessary.

Frost forms on the evaporator coil

Inspect and clean the filter, remove obstructions from vents, or adjust the thermostat to a warmer setting.

Product does not maintain desired temperature

Park the RV in a shaded area, use window shades, keep windows/doors closed, and avoid using heat-producing appliances.

Before use

  • Ensure the RV is parked on a level surface.
  • Verify the roof opening is properly framed and sized (14.3 in. x 14.3 in.).
  • Disconnect 115 VAC power and 12 VDC battery terminal.
  • Verify the duct divider is cut to the correct size based on ceiling thickness.
  • Ensure all mounting hardware is included in the ADB kit.
