This guide covers the selection, care, and maintenance of Honeywell Howard Leight hearing protection products. Proper maintenance is essential for ensuring the effectiveness of your hearing protection. Always inspect your equipment before use and replace it if it shows signs of damage, hardening, or degradation.
Earmuff Care and Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance and hygiene for all earmuff types, follow these guidelines:
- Inspect: Regularly examine earcups and ear cushions for cracks and leaks. Discard the unit if earcups are visibly damaged or compromised. Replace ear cushions if they are damaged.
- Clean: Wash earcups and ear cushions regularly with mild soap and water. Do not dip the earmuffs into water. Do not use other substances, as they may degrade the materials and compromise effectiveness.
- Replace: Replace ear cushions and foam inserts every 6-8 months under normal wear, or every 3-4 months with heavy use or in humid/extreme climates.
Earplug Care and Maintenance
Maintenance requirements vary by earplug type:

- Disposable Foam Earplugs: Inspect prior to fitting. Discard after each use or if compromised. Hygiene standards dictate they should be discarded at the end of every shift.
- Push-In Foam Earplugs: Inspect for dirt, damage, or hardness; discard if compromised. Clean between each use with mild soap and warm water, then pat dry. Do not use chemicals or disinfectants. Replace after 5 days or if the foam tip is damaged/hardened.
- Reusable Earplugs: Inspect for dirt, damage, deformation, or extreme hardness; discard if compromised. Wash with mild soap and warm water only. Pat dry and store when not in use. With proper maintenance, they can be used daily for 2-4 weeks.
- Banded Earplugs: Inspect band and earpods prior to fitting. Replace earpods if dirty, damaged, hard, or stiff. Replace the band if it becomes brittle or deformed. Clean with mild soap and warm water only. Replace pods every 2-4 weeks.
How to Properly Insert Earplugs
Follow these steps for effective insertion of roll-down foam earplugs:
- Roll: Gently roll the foam to avoid creases, then roll firmly to make the cylinder as small and stiff as possible. Move quickly to the next step so the earplug does not expand before insertion.
- Pull: Reach over the head to pull the outer ear out, up, or back to open the ear canal.
- Insert: Insert the earplug far enough so it goes around the bend in the ear canal. This may feel sensitive or trigger a cough reflex, which is normal. Let go of the ear after the earplug is fully inserted.
VeriPRO Fit-Testing System
The VeriPRO system is a three-step process to check the effectiveness of an employee's earplug fit in each ear. It uses either Quick Check or Complete Check modes. The system consists of software, an audio processor, and audiometrically optimized headphones designed to test any earplug.

Practical help
Common problems
Discard the earplugs immediately as they are compromised and will not provide adequate protection.
Replace the ear cushions immediately. If the earcups themselves are damaged, the entire unit should be discarded.
This is normal when the earplug is inserted far enough to go around the bend in the ear canal.
Before use
- Inspect earcups and cushions for cracks or leaks.
- Check earplugs for dirt, damage, or hardening.
- Ensure hands are clean before handling earplugs.
- Verify the NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) is appropriate for your environment.
- For banded earplugs, check if the band is brittle or deformed.
Specs in practice
- NRR (Noise Reduction Rating)
- A measure of the effectiveness of hearing protection devices in reducing noise exposure in decibels.
Images and diagrams
- The insertion guide illustrates the three-step process: rolling the foam, pulling the outer ear to open the canal, and inserting the plug past the bend.
Model compatibility
- Some earmuff models are specifically designed for use with hard hats (Cap-Mounted).
- VeriPRO headphones are calibrated specifically for the VeriPRO test and are not for general listening.
