Quick guide from the manual
The Sealey VS5170 is a specialized timing tool kit designed for VAG 1.4D, 1.6D, and 2.0D Common Rail (EA288) diesel engines. This manual provides essential procedures for checking and adjusting engine timing, replacing the toothed belt, and servicing the camshaft adjustment control valve and balance shaft unit. Always refer to the vehicle manufacturer's service instructions alongside this guide.
Safety and Warnings
- Eye Protection: Always wear approved eye protection and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
- Engine Timing: When timing an engine, prevent it from being turned over. Use a notice or inhibit the engine.
- Damage Prevention: Incorrect or out-of-phase camshaft timing can cause contact between the valve head and the piston crown, resulting in severe engine damage.
- Tool Usage: Do not use locking tools to counter-hold the camshaft or high-pressure pump when releasing or tightening sprocket nuts/bolts.
Applications
This kit is compatible with a wide range of Audi, Seat, Skoda, and Volkswagen vehicles equipped with 1.4, 1.6, and 2.0 TDi Common Rail (EA288) engines. Refer to the full application list in the manual for specific vehicle models and engine codes (e.g., CUSA, CLHA, CRBC, etc.).

Engine Timing Check
To check the engine timing:
- Remove the engine top cover, coolant return pipe, and fuel feed pipes to access the toothed belt upper cover.
- Remove the toothed belt upper cover.
- Raise the vehicle, remove the wheel and inner body shield.
- Rotate the auxiliary belt tensioner to release belt tension and remove the auxiliary belt.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley and toothed belt lower cover.
- Rotate the crankshaft until the guide peg is at approximately 7 o'clock.
- Check the camshaft hub position and use the appropriate locking tools (VS5170.01, VS5170.04) to verify alignment.
Engine Timing Adjustment
If timing requires adjustment:
- Remove all timing tools.
- Rotate the crankshaft to align the camshaft hub fork with the cylinder head location hole.
- Install locking pins and release sprocket bolts/nuts using a counter-hold tool (e.g., VS783).
- Replace the toothed belt, idler pulleys, and tensioner as required.
- Torque Specifications:
- Camshaft sprocket bolt: 10Nm (initial), 100Nm (final).
- High pressure fuel pump sprocket nut: 10Nm (initial), 95Nm (final).
- Tensioner retaining nut: 20Nm + 45 degrees.
- Camshaft hub fork screw: 9Nm.
Camshaft Adjustment Control Valve
For 1.6L and 2.0L engines with a hydraulic valve adjustment unit:
- Lock the engine in the correct timing position.
- Remove the blanking plug and insert VS5170.02 locking pin into the camshaft.
- Release the central bolt of the valve adjustment unit.
- Important: Do not remove the VS5170.02 pin while the adjustment unit is not fitted to prevent unintentional camshaft rotation.
- Ensure the diamond-coated friction washer is refitted during reassembly.
Balance Shaft Unit (1.4TDi)
For 1.4L 3-cylinder engines:
- The balance shaft is part of the oil pump unit.
- Use VS5170.04 locking pin through the drive gear to aid positioning.
- Ensure timing marks on the oil pump drive gear and crankshaft drive gear are correctly aligned.

Common problems
Drill an 8mm hole through the cover 10mm above the lower retaining clip to access the locking tab.
Slight misalignment (1-2mm) at the H.P. Pump hub is acceptable and not detrimental to engine operation.
Slight differences in tension indicator position are normal after initial rotation and do not affect operation.
Before use
- Wear approved eye protection.
- Ensure the vehicle is safely supported on axle stands.
- Verify the engine code matches the application list.
- Ensure you have a torque wrench capable of the specified settings.
- Do not use locking tools to counter-hold when tightening/loosening bolts.
Model compatibility
- Compatible with VAG 1.4D, 1.6D, and 2.0D Common Rail (EA288) diesel engines.
- Early engines (2012-2013) require specific modification to the lower cover.
