Quick guide from the manual

This document provides instructions for the Sealey VSE5939 Timing Tool Set, designed for 1.6CRDi belt drive diesel engines in specific Hyundai and Kia models. The primary purpose of this kit is to facilitate timing belt replacement and timing checks. Always refer to the vehicle manufacturer's service instructions alongside this guide to ensure correct procedures and data.

Safety

  • Wear approved eye protection and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure the vehicle is adequately supported by axle stands if raised.
  • Do not attempt to start or move the vehicle while in gear and with timing devices fitted.
  • When timing an engine, prevent the engine from being turned over.
  • Incorrect or out-of-phase camshaft timing can cause contact between the valve head and piston crown, resulting in engine damage.

Applications

  1. Fit new guide pulley and bolt, tighten to 42-54 Nm.
  2. Fit new tensioner pulley and bolt (finger tighten), lock into retracted position with the VSE5939-05 Tensioner Locking Pin.
  3. Ensure camshaft, crankshaft, and high-pressure fuel pump timing marks are aligned.
  4. Fit the timing belt, ensuring marks on the belt align with sprocket marks.
  5. Remove the VSE5939-05 Tensioner Locking Pin.
  6. Using the VSE5939-03 Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool, apply an anti-clockwise torque of 34-44 Nm to the camshaft sprocket.
  7. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts to 20-25 Nm.
  8. Remove the Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool.
  9. Turn the belt tensioner pulley slowly clockwise until the pointer aligns with the notch.
  10. Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt to 25-34 Nm.
  11. Remove the VSE5939-02 Camshaft Locking Tool.
  12. Ensure all timing marks are aligned.
  13. Remove the VSE5939-01 Crankshaft Locking Tool.
  14. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions clockwise and ensure the belt tensioner pointer is aligned with the notch.
  15. Ensure the VSE5939-02 Camshaft Locking Tool can be inserted easily; if not, repeat the timing procedure.
  16. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts to 33-37 Nm.

Common problems

Timing procedure failure

If the VSE5939-02 Camshaft Locking Tool cannot be inserted easily after two revolutions of the crankshaft, the timing procedure must be repeated.

Engine damage risk

Incorrect or out-of-phase camshaft timing can cause contact between the valve head and piston crown. Always verify alignment before completing assembly.

Before use

  • Ensure the vehicle is supported by axle stands if raised.
  • Wear approved eye protection and appropriate PPE.
  • Ensure the engine is inhibited to prevent accidental turning.
  • Verify engine codes (D4FE, D4FEU3) match the vehicle.
  • Ensure the starter motor is removed and the flywheel is locked (VSE5935 not supplied).
