Quick guide from the manual
This manual covers the operation and safety requirements for the Sealey WST series portable transformers. These units are designed for intermittent use with power tools and continuous use with lighting products. Key operational requirements include ensuring the power socket is reliably earthed, using a 13A anti-surge fuse, and allowing the unit to cool if the thermal cut-out switch trips.
Safety instructions
- Electrical Safety: Always inspect power supply leads, plugs, and connections for wear or damage before use. Sealey recommends using an RCD (Residual Current Device).
- Maintenance: Disconnect from mains power before performing any maintenance. Only use genuine parts for repairs.
- Usage Restrictions: Do not exceed the rated capacity of the transformer. Do not use the transformer if you are tired, under the influence of alcohol, or drugs. Keep children and unauthorized persons away from the working area.
- Environment: Store in a safe, dry, childproof area when not in use.
Wiring the plug
The product is fitted with a BS1363/A 13 Amp 3-pin plug. If replacement is required, follow these steps:

- Connect the GREEN/YELLOW earth wire to the earth terminal 'E'.
- Connect the BROWN live wire to the live terminal 'L'.
- Connect the BLUE neutral wire to the neutral terminal 'N'.
- Ensure the cable outer sheath extends inside the cable restraint and that the restraint is tight.
Operation
The transformer is designed for intermittent duty (5 minutes on / 30 minutes off). It is normal for the unit to get warm during use; place it on a surface that will not be damaged by heat.
- Overheating: A temperature-sensitive cut-out switch is fitted. If it trips, rectify the cause of overheating, allow the unit to cool, and press the reset button located on the side adjacent to the output sockets.
- Extension Leads: The transformer should be plugged directly into a 230V mains socket. Any necessary extension lead should be placed between the transformer and the tool.
- Fuse Failure: If fuse failure occurs at switch-on, ensure the fuse is a 13A anti-surge type.
Specifications
The WST series transformers feature thermostatic overload protection and are IP rated (IP54 for WST1500/3000, IP44 for WST5000). The earth type is Centre Tapped to Earth.
- WST1500: 900VA continuous rating, 2 x 16A/110V sockets.
- WST3000: 1650VA continuous rating, 2 x 16A/110V sockets.
- WST5000: 2800VA continuous rating, 2 x 16A + 1 x 32A/110V sockets.

Practical help
Common problems
This is normal, especially during continuous use. Ensure it is placed on a heat-resistant surface.
Determine and rectify the cause of overheating, allow the unit to cool, then press the reset button located on the side adjacent to the output sockets.
Check that the fuse is a 13A anti-surge type. Ensure the circuit breaker has a suitable tripping characteristic.
Before use
- Inspect power supply leads and plugs for wear or damage.
- Ensure the voltage rating on the appliance suits the power supply.
- Verify the power socket is reliably and permanently earthed.
- Ensure the transformer is placed on a surface that will not be damaged by heat.
- Check that the plug is fitted with the correct 13A fuse.
Specs in practice
- Continuous rating (VA)
- The maximum power output the transformer can sustain for continuous operation.
- Intermittent Duty
- The duty cycle of the transformer: 5 minutes of operation followed by 30 minutes of rest.
Images and diagrams
- The wiring diagram illustrates the correct connection of the Earth (Green/Yellow), Live (Brown), and Neutral (Blue) wires to the 13A plug terminals.
